An abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure focused on reducing the amount of excess skin or fat that protrudes on the abdomen. Excess skin can hang over the abdomen for several reasons, including pregnancy, weight gain, or weak abdominal muscles. When the skin stretches, it loses its elasticity, and it may not respond as well to the traditional fat-reducing methods of diet and exercise.
Prior to an abdominoplasty procedure, our dentist will evaluate your condition and determine your overall health. If you are on a weight-loss plan, we recommend being close to your target weight before receiving an abdominoplasty. Women who are planning on future pregnancies should also wait to receive a tummy tuck. If you chose to proceed with an abdominoplasty, you will receive antibiotics prior to your surgery to help prevent infection.
Abdominoplasty commonly involves making a U-shaped incision across the pubic area, between the two hipbones, and a second incision by the navel. The skin is lifted, exposing the lose muscles and tissue. Our dentist will remove excess skin and fat, as well as tighten any loose muscles. The skin is then placed back over the tissue and muscles, and the incisions are closed up with sutures. At our practice, abdominoplasty is performed with general anesthesia.
After an abdominoplasty, it is normal to experience slight swelling. After 5-7 days, the sutures will be removed. In most cases, it takes between 2 and 4 weeks before patients are able to return to work. Total recovery can take a total of 9 to 12 months before any scarring fades.
